How much do solar panels and batteries cost in Traralgon?
What solar panels and home batteries cost in Traralgon in 2026: sourced price bands, what moves a quote, how rebates apply and red flags to watch for.
A fully installed 6 kW solar system averaged $5,810 to $6,730 per system in Melbourne in October 2026, and a 10 kWh home battery averaged $7,784 to $8,284 per system nationally in August 2026 with the federal battery discount already deducted. Those are published averages rather than Traralgon quotes. Roof access, switchboard condition, phase supply and travel are the usual reasons a Latrobe Valley price lands above or below them.
Every price band used anywhere on this site is collected here, each with its source and scope, so you can hold a written quote up against it. The prices you are actually charged come from the independent provider you deal with, who inspects, quotes and installs on its own account; the about page explains how an enquiry is passed on.
What does a solar panel system cost in Traralgon in 2026?
These bands come from the Solar Choice Price Index dated 1 October 2026. Solar Choice compiles offers from a network of more than 200 installers and refreshes the index monthly. The figures are Melbourne averages, which is the nearest published city series to the Latrobe Valley. They are fully installed prices that already include the upfront STC discount and GST.
The low end of each band is the average standard offer and the high end is the average premium offer. Solar Choice says premium offers come in 20 to 30% above standard offers because the underlying panels and inverters cost more.
| System size (panel capacity) | Melbourne VIC average, standard to premium | What the figure covers |
|---|---|---|
| 5 kW | $5,140 to $5,970 per system | Panels, inverter, mounting and labour, after STCs, incl GST |
| 6 kW | $5,810 to $6,730 per system | Same scope, a common residential size |
| 7 kW | $6,490 to $7,570 per system | Same scope |
| 10 kW | $8,920 to $10,410 per system | Same scope, the largest size in this table |
How to choose a size, read your bills and plan for later electric appliances is covered on the solar panel installation page.
What does a home battery cost to install?
The battery bands come from the Solar Choice Battery Price Index for August 2026 (page updated 16 September 2026). That index is refreshed every three months and is a national average, not a Victorian one. It includes installation, GST and the federal Cheaper Home Batteries discount.
| Usable battery capacity | National average, installed | Low end of band | High end of band |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 kWh | $7,784 to $8,284 per system | Battery only, for a home that already has a hybrid inverter | Battery plus its own inverter, AC coupled to an existing system |
| 20 kWh | $14,972 to $15,772 per system | Battery only | Battery plus its own inverter |
Solar Choice notes that its battery figures do not normally include meter installation fees or the extra cost of a difficult install. Siting rules, sizing and how the discount is applied to a battery are explained on the home battery installation page.
What do inverter swaps and solar repairs cost?
Not every job is a new system. Plenty of homes already have panels, and the cost question is about an ageing inverter or a fault.
| Job | Published band | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Like for like string inverter replacement, 5 to 6.6 kW system | $1,500 to $3,000 | Energy Matters, 22 July 2026 |
| Hybrid (battery ready) inverter upgrade, same system size | $2,500 to $4,500 | Energy Matters, 22 July 2026 |
| Health check and fault diagnostic | $150 to $300 per visit | Why Solar, 1 March 2026 |
| Wiring and connector repair | $150 to $400 | Why Solar, 1 March 2026 |
| Faulty DC isolator replacement | $200 to $500 | Why Solar, 1 March 2026 |
| Cracked or damaged panel replacement, plus labour | $300 to $800 per panel | Why Solar, 1 March 2026 |
These are national guide figures. When to replace an inverter rather than repair it is covered on the solar inverter replacement page.
What pushes a Traralgon solar quote up or down?
Two homes in the same street can get quite different prices for the same size system. The usual cost drivers are:
- Roof type and pitch. A steep pitch or brittle old tiles take longer to work on safely and need more care to avoid breakage. A low pitch metal roof is usually the quickest.
- Number of storeys. A double storey home needs more access equipment and edge protection than a single storey brick veneer.
- Phase supply. Many houses are single phase. A three phase home can connect a larger inverter, and AusNet sets different size and export allowances for each, explained in the AusNet export limits guide.
- Switchboard work. If the existing board has no room for the new protection devices, or still uses old fuses, the quote may include switchboard work as a separate line.
- Hybrid or string inverter. A battery ready hybrid inverter costs more upfront than a plain string inverter, as the bands above show, but can save a second inverter later if a battery is planned.
- Panel layout. Splitting panels across two or three roof faces means more cabling and mounting time than one north facing run.
- Travel and site access. A farmhouse outside Tyers, Glengarry or Yinnar takes longer to reach than a house in central Traralgon, and long cable runs to a shed or detached garage add materials.
- Battery location. A battery may need a protected spot away from direct sun, with vermin proofing and signage, which can add an enclosure or extra cabling.
If you would like a provider to price your own roof rather than rely on averages, you can ask for a solar price for your home at any point while reading.
How do STCs and rebates change the figure you pay?
The bands above already have the federal STC discount taken off. Two things to understand about it:
- Panels: STCs for a solar system are based on the electricity it is expected to generate until the scheme ends in 2030, according to the Clean Energy Regulator, so a system installed later earns fewer certificates and a smaller upfront discount.
- Batteries: the number of STCs per kWh of battery capacity is set to step down every six months through to 2030, so the battery discount shrinks over time.
On top of that, the Solar Victoria solar panel rebate is worked out after other discounts, including STCs, and is paid to the retailer rather than to you. Eligibility, the loan option and the order to apply in are on the Traralgon rebates guide.
Why might a Traralgon quote differ from these averages?
- The solar bands are Melbourne figures and the battery bands are national. A regional install can carry more travel time.
- Indexes are averages across many installers and many roofs. Your roof and switchboard are one specific case.
- Prices move. The solar index changes monthly and the battery index quarterly.
- Difficult installs and meter work are not built into the battery averages.
- Product choice matters. Two quotes for “6 kW” can use very different panels and inverters.
How should you compare two solar or battery quotes?
Put the quotes side by side and check that they are pricing the same thing:
| Check | What to look for |
|---|---|
| System size | Panel capacity in kW and inverter capacity in kW, both stated |
| Products | Brand and model for panels, inverter and any battery |
| Inclusions | Mounting, cabling, monitoring, switchboard work, export limiting set up, removal of old equipment |
| Discounts | Whether the price shown is before or after STCs and any state rebate |
| Approvals | Who lodges the AusNet application and any rebate paperwork |
| Certificate | Inspection by a Licensed Electrical Inspector and a Certificate of Electrical Safety at the end |
| Warranties | Product warranties and a separate workmanship warranty, in writing |
The full tick list, in the order the job runs, is in the solar quote checklist.
Which red flags should make you pause?
- No brands or models. A quote that only says “tier one panels” cannot be compared or checked against the approved product lists.
- Install before approval. Being offered an install date before Solar Victoria has confirmed your eligibility puts the rebate at risk, because installing first means no rebate.
- Promised feed-in income. Victoria has had no regulated minimum export rate since July 2025, so any figure a salesperson quotes is just one retailer’s current offer and can change.
- Promised export amount. The export limit is set by AusNet when the application is approved, not by the salesperson.
- Battery discount left vague. Ask whether the battery price already has the federal discount taken off, or whether you are expected to claim it.
- No mention of inspection or a certificate. In Victoria solar and battery work must be inspected and certified before the system is turned on.
- Pressure to sign on the spot. A genuine price holds long enough for you to get a second quote.
Next step: get a price for your own roof
Averages only go so far. To have an independent provider price your home, send a Traralgon solar or battery cost enquiry and include:
- a recent power bill, ideally one that shows daily usage;
- two or three photos of the roof taken from the ground, showing each face you would use;
- a photo of the meter box and switchboard with the cover open;
- whether the house is single or three phase, if you know;
- whether you want panels only, a battery only, or both.
Frequently asked questions
- Are the price bands on this page quotes for Traralgon?
No. They are published averages: the solar figures are Melbourne averages from the Solar Choice Price Index and the battery figures are national averages from the Solar Choice Battery Price Index. A provider has to see your roof, switchboard and bills before giving a firm price for a home in Traralgon or nearby.
- Do the solar prices already include the STC discount?
Yes. Solar Choice publishes its installed system prices with the upfront STC discount and GST already included. The Solar Homes rebate, if you are eligible, is not included and would come off after that.
- Why is there a gap between the low and high battery figures?
The low figure is for a battery alone, which suits a home that already has a hybrid inverter able to run it. The high figure adds a separate battery inverter so the battery can be AC coupled to an existing solar system that has a plain string inverter.
- Is a cheaper quote always the better deal?
Not always. A lower price can reflect cheaper panels and inverters, a smaller inverter than the panel array, missing switchboard work or a thinner warranty. Compare the models, inclusions and warranty terms on each quote before comparing the totals.
- Can I get a price without someone visiting first?
Some providers will give an indicative price from photos and a power bill, then confirm it after a site inspection. Clear photos of the roof faces, the meter box and the switchboard make an indicative figure much closer to the final one.
