Solar and battery rebates available in Traralgon in 2026

Solar and battery rebates for Traralgon homes in 2026: the Solar Homes rebate and loan, who is eligible, the steps in order, and the federal battery discount.

A Traralgon household can use up to two programs in 2026: Solar Victoria’s rebate for solar panels, which can be paired with a matching loan that charges no interest, and a federal discount on an eligible home battery. Panels also carry the federal STC discount, which is built into the installed price. The order matters, because the Victorian rebate is lost if the system goes on the roof before Solar Victoria approves you.

This guide explains each program in plain terms. The providers who receive enquiries through this site are independent businesses, and they handle the quote, the rebate paperwork and the installation themselves; this site does neither, as the about page explains.

Which solar and battery programs can Traralgon households use?

Program Run by What it covers How you receive it
Solar Homes solar panel rebate Solar Victoria Part of the cost of a new solar panel system on an eligible home Paid to the retailer and deducted from your invoice
Solar Homes interest-free loan Solar Victoria A loan matching the rebate amount Paid to the retailer with the rebate, repaid by you monthly
Small-scale Technology Certificates for panels Clean Energy Regulator scheme An upfront discount on eligible solar systems Usually taken off the price by the installer
Cheaper Home Batteries Federal government, through STCs Around 30% off an eligible battery Upfront reduction, a rebate after installation, or claimed yourself

Solar Victoria is no longer taking applications for its interest-free battery loan, so there is no state battery support to apply for at present. A website or quote that still promises a Victorian battery amount is relying on an offer that has closed.

What is the Solar Homes solar panel rebate?

The Solar Victoria solar panel rebate covers up to half the purchase cost of an eligible system, up to a capped amount shown on Solar Victoria’s page. It is calculated after other discounts, including STCs, so it applies to the price that remains once the federal discount is off. Solar Victoria pays it to your retailer and the retailer deducts it from the invoice, which means you pay only the balance after installation.

What is the interest-free loan?

You can also take an interest-free loan equal to the rebate. From 1 May 2026 the loan has to be selected when you apply, not added later. No collateral is needed. If approved, the loan goes to your retailer alongside the rebate. You repay it by monthly direct debit over 4 years, starting 30 days after your installation is approved.

Who is eligible for the Solar Homes rebate?

You must meet every one of these:

  • You own the home and live in it, or you own a home under construction where the system will go.
  • The combined taxable income of all owners is under the cap set by Solar Victoria.
  • The property is valued under Solar Victoria’s property value cap.
  • The address has not already received a Solar Homes solar panel or battery rebate.
  • The address has had no solar panels put in during the past 10 years.
  • You use an authorised solar retailer and products from the eligible product lists.

The current income and property value limits are published on the Solar Victoria page. Check them before you collect quotes, since they decide whether a rebate should appear on the quote at all.

In what order should you apply?

Solar Victoria sets out the steps in this order:

  1. Research your options, for example with Solar Victoria’s buyers guides.
  2. Talk to an authorised solar retailer.
  3. Choose a system from the eligible product lists.
  4. Get a written quote, which the retailer uploads to the Solar Victoria portal.
  5. Wait for the email confirming the quote has been uploaded.
  6. Get pre-approval from your distributor to connect and export. In Traralgon that is AusNet, explained in the AusNet export limits guide.
  7. Upload proof of eligibility to the portal: identity, income and ownership documents.
  8. Wait for Solar Victoria to confirm eligibility and email your QR code.
  9. Have the system installed. The installer scans your QR code on site before any work begins.
  10. Pay the difference between the total price and the rebate.
  11. Start repaying the loan, if you chose one.

Two deadlines apply. For an existing home, installation must be finished within 120 days of Solar Victoria sending the QR code. For a home under construction the window is 270 days. If the system is installed before eligibility is approved, no rebate is paid. The Traralgon solar quote checklist turns these steps into ticks you can follow on the day.

What changes for solar support in July 2027?

On Saturday 17 October 2026 the Victorian Government announced that household support for installing solar panels will move into the Victorian Energy Upgrades program from 1 July 2027. Until 30 June 2027 the current rebate arrangements, including the interest-free loan option, stay in place. Solar Victoria will keep administering existing loans and its hot water rebates, according to the announcement page. If you are weighing up whether to install before or after that date, check the Solar Victoria site again closer to the time.

How does the Cheaper Home Batteries discount work?

The federal program opened on 1 July 2025. The Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water describes it as a discount of around 30% on the upfront cost of an eligible battery from 5 kWh to 100 kWh, with new or existing solar. The discount is delivered through STCs under the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme, with changes to the scheme rules that started on 1 May 2026. It is reviewed at least annually and decreases until 2030.

There is no application form. Your installer or retailer either takes the discount off the price upfront or gives a rebate after installation. You can instead keep the certificates and create and sell the STCs yourself through the REC Registry, which DCCEEW allows if you would rather not take the retailer’s discount.

How many STCs does a battery earn?

The Clean Energy Regulator sets an STC factor per kWh of usable capacity for each period. Its battery page, updated 29 October 2026, lists:

Year January to June (2026: January to April) July to December (2026: May to December)
2026 8.4 6.8
2027 5.7 5.2
2028 4.6 4.1
2029 3.6 3.1
2030 2.6 2.1

The factor is then tapered by capacity:

Usable capacity band Share of the factor applied
0 to 14 kWh 100%
Above 14 to 28 kWh 60%
Above 28 to 50 kWh 15%

Only the first 50 kWh of usable capacity earns STCs, even if the battery is larger. The taper is one reason a very large battery attracts a smaller discount per kWh than a mid sized one.

Which batteries qualify?

Per the CER, the battery must be new (made within 12 months of installation), between 5 and 100 kWh nominal capacity, installed in a single job with a new or existing solar system up to 1 MW, listed on the CEC approved battery list, compliant with AS/NZS 5139:2019 and Victorian electrical safety law, capable of joining a virtual power plant if grid connected, and installed by an SAA accredited installer with battery endorsement. Only one battery system per premises is eligible. Sizing and siting are covered on the home battery installation page.

What about feed-in tariffs?

There is no minimum feed-in tariff in Victoria any more; retailers set their own. How that affects the value of a battery is covered in solar only versus solar and battery.

How do the rebates show up on a quote?

A quote for an eligible home should show the system price, the STC discount, and then the Solar Homes rebate as separate lines, so you can see each one. A battery quote should state whether the federal discount is already deducted. The bands on the Traralgon cost guide already have STCs taken off but not the state rebate. If you want the provider to work out the rebate for you, start a rebate eligible solar enquiry.

Next step: send a rebate ready enquiry

To get a quote that is set up for the Solar Homes rebate and any battery discount, send a Traralgon rebate enquiry and say in it:

  • whether you own and live in the home, or it is under construction;
  • whether the address has had solar installed in the last 10 years, or a previous Solar Homes rebate;
  • whether you want the interest-free loan, since it has to be chosen when you apply;
  • whether a battery is part of the plan now or later;
  • a recent power bill and your suburb.

Leave income and property value details for the Solar Victoria portal; the provider does not need them in the enquiry.

Frequently asked questions

Can renters or landlords in Traralgon get the Solar Homes solar panel rebate?

The solar panel rebate described on this page is for owners who live in the home, or own a home under construction. Renters and landlords should check Solar Victoria's website for any separate rental offers before assuming they are excluded.

Can I claim the state rebate and the federal battery discount together?

They cover different things. The Solar Homes rebate applies to solar panels, while the Cheaper Home Batteries discount applies to an eligible battery. A household installing both may be able to use each on its own part of the job, subject to each program's rules.

I already have solar. Can I still get help with a battery?

Yes. The federal battery discount applies to batteries installed with new or existing solar systems. The Victorian battery loan has closed, so the federal discount is the main support for adding a battery in 2026.

What happens if my installation is delayed past the deadline?

Talk to your retailer and Solar Victoria as soon as a delay looks likely, because the approval is tied to the installation window after the QR code is issued. Do not let anyone start work on the assumption that the rebate will still be paid.

Does the rebate reduce my STC discount?

No. The federal STC discount is applied first, and the Solar Homes rebate is then worked out on the price after that and any other discounts. The order of the two means you get both, but the state rebate is calculated on a lower starting figure.
